RESUMO

Poly[(thiophene)-alt-(6,7-difluoro-2(2-hexyldecyloxy)quinoxaline)] (PTQ10) emerges as a promising candidate for donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs) due to its high efficiency, simplified synthesis, and cost-effectiveness. The acceptor unit of PTQ10 is derived from the alkylation of 5,8-dibromo-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-2-ol, emphasizing the importance of its economical synthesis for commercial viability. This study investigates triflic acid-assisted regioselective bromination of quinoxaline derivatives and proposes an alternative synthetic pathway for PTQ10. The developed route benefits from concise synthetic steps, a dependable procedure, and high overall yield. Starting with the condensation of 4,5-difluorobenzene-1,2-diamine with ethyl oxoacetate to yield 6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-2-ol, subsequent triflic acid-assisted regioselective bromination produces 5,8-dibromo-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-2-ol in high yield. Alkylation under Mitsunobu reaction conditions yields 5,8-dibromo-6,7-difluoro-2-(2-hexyldecyloxy)quinoxaline, followed by polymerization with 2,5-distannylated thiophene under Stille reaction conditions to afford PTQ10. This research provides insights into efficient synthetic strategies for PTQ10, advancing its potential for commercial application in OSCs.

INTRODUCTION: Regdanvimab, a monoclonal antibody pharmaceutical, is the first Korean drug approved for treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We analyzed the therapeutic efficacy of regdanvimab in patients with the COVID-19 delta variant infection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of patients hospitalized at two Korean tertiary COVID-19 hospitals with COVID-19 delta variant infection between May 26, 2021, and January 30, 2022. To analyze the therapeutic efficacy of regdanvimab, the patients were divided into regdanvimab and non-regdanvimab groups and were 1:1 propensity-score (PS)-matched on age, severity at admission, and COVID-19 vaccination history. RESULTS: Of 492 patients, 262 (53.3%) and 230 (46.7%) were in the regdanvimab and non-regdanvimab groups, respectively. After PS matching the groups on age, severity at admission, and COVID-19 vaccination history, each group comprised 189 patients. The 30-day hospital mortality rates (0.0% vs. 1.6%, p = 0.030), proportions of patients with exacerbated conditions to severe/critical/died (9.5% vs. 16.4%, p = 0.047), proportions who received oxygen therapy because of pneumonia exacerbation (7.4% vs. 16.4%, p = 0.007), and proportions with a daily National Early Warning Score ≥ 5 from hospital day 2 were significantly lower in the regdanvimab group. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that regdanvimab reduced the exacerbation rates of conditions and mortality in patients with the COVID-19 delta variant infection. Thus, it is recommended to streamline the drug approval system during epidemics of new variant viruses to improve the availability and usage of therapeutics for patients. To facilitate this, relevant institutional support is required.

Printing structurally colored patterns is of great importance for providing customized graphics for various purposes. Although a direct writing technique has been developed, the use of colloidal dispersions as photonic inks requires delicate printing conditions and restricts the mechanical and optical properties of printed patterns. In this work, we produce elastic photonic microbeads through scalable bulk emulsification and formulate photonic inks containing microbeads for direct writing. To produce the microbeads, a photocurable colloidal dispersion is emulsified into a highly concentrated sucrose solution via vortexing, which results in spherical emulsion droplets with a relatively narrow size distribution. The microbeads are produced by photopolymerization and are then suspended in urethane acrylate resin at volume fractions of 0.35-0.45. The photonic inks retain high color saturation of the microbeads and offer enhanced printability and dimensional control on various target substrates including fabrics, papers, and even skins. Importantly, the printed graphics show high mechanical stability as the elastic microbeads are embedded in the polyurethane matrix. Moreover, the colors show a wide viewing angle and low-angle dependency due to the optical isotropy of individual microbeads and light refraction at the air-matrix interface. We postulate that this versatile direct writing technique is potentially useful for structural color coating and printing on the surfaces of arbitrary 3D objects.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the association between obesity and cancer risk as well as site-specific cancer risks in adults with HIV using a nationwide health screening database in Korea. METHODS: Of the 16,671 adults with a new diagnosis of HIV from 2004 to 2020, 456 incident cancer cases and 1,814 individually matched controls by sex, year of birth, year of HIV diagnosis, and follow-up duration (1:4 ratio) were included in this nested case-control study. The association between obesity (body mass index ≥25 kg/m2) and cancer risks was estimated and presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Of the 456 cancer incident cases, there were 146 AIDS-defining cancer cases and 310 non-AIDS-defining cancer cases. Compared with non-obese adults with HIV, obese adults with HIV were at higher risk of non-AIDS-defining cancer (OR = 1.478, 95% CI = 1.118-1.955). Otherwise, the overall risk of AIDS-defining cancer (OR = 0.816, 95% CI = 0.520-1.279) and each type of AIDS-defining cancer (Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) were not high in obese adults with HIV. Of the specific types of non-AIDS-defining cancers, obesity was associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (OR = 3.090, 95% CI = 1.110-8.604) and liver, bile duct, and pancreatic cancers (OR = 2.532, 95% CI = 1.141-5.617). CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, which is one of the important health concerns in HIV management, was associated with an increased risk of non-AIDS-defining cancer but not AIDS-defining cancer.

Chronic primary pain conditions (CPPCs) affect over 100 million Americans, predominantly women. They remain ineffectively treated, in large part because of a lack of valid animal models with translational relevance. Here, we characterized a CPPC mouse model that integrated clinically relevant genetic (catechol-O-methyltransferase; COMT knockdown) and environmental (stress and injury) factors. Compared with wild-type mice, Comt+/- mice undergoing repeated swim stress and molar extraction surgery intervention exhibited pronounced multisite body pain and depressive-like behavior lasting >3 months. Comt+/- mice undergoing the intervention also exhibited enhanced activity of primary afferent nociceptors innervating hindpaw and low back sites and increased plasma concentrations of norepinephrine and pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-17A. The pain and depressive-like behavior were of greater magnitude and longer duration (≥12 months) in females versus males. Furthermore, increases in anxiety-like behavior and IL-6 were female-specific. The effect of COMT genotype × stress interactions on pain, IL-6, and IL-17A was validated in a cohort of 549 patients with CPPCs, demonstrating clinical relevance. Last, we assessed the predictive validity of the model for analgesic screening and found that it successfully predicted the lack of efficacy of minocycline and the CB2 agonist GW842166X, which were effective in spared nerve injury and complete Freund's adjuvant models, respectively, but failed in clinical trials. Yet, pain in the CPPC model was alleviated by the beta-3 adrenergic antagonist SR59230A. Thus, the CPPC mouse model reliably recapitulates clinically and biologically relevant features of CPPCs and may be implemented to test underlying mechanisms and find new therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: A healthcare system's collapse due to a pandemic, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can expose healthcare workers (HCWs) to various mental health problems. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the depression and anxiety of HCWs. METHODS: A nationwide questionnaire-based survey was conducted on HCWs who worked in healthcare facilities and public health centers in Korea in December 2020. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were used to measure depression and anxiety. To investigate factors associated with depression and anxiety, stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 1,425 participating HCWs were included. The mean depression score (PHQ-9) of HCWs before and after COVID-19 increased from 2.37 to 5.39, and the mean anxiety score (GAD-7) increased from 1.41 to 3.41. The proportion of HCWs with moderate to severe depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) increased from 3.8% before COVID-19 to 19.5% after COVID-19, whereas that of HCWs with moderate to severe anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 10) increased from 2.0% to 10.1%. In our study, insomnia, chronic fatigue symptoms and physical symptoms after COVID-19, anxiety score (GAD-7) after COVID-19, living alone, and exhaustion were positively correlated with depression. Furthermore, post-traumatic stress symptoms, stress score (Global Assessment of Recent Stress), depression score (PHQ-9) after COVID-19, and exhaustion were positively correlated with anxiety. CONCLUSION: In Korea, during the COVID-19 pandemic, HCWs commonly suffered from mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. Regularly checking the physical and mental health problems of HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial, and social support and strategy are needed to reduce the heavy workload and psychological distress of HCWs.

BACKGROUND: Nationwide research on the association between carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CREs) and antibiotic use is limited. METHODS: This nested case-control study analyzed Korean National Health Insurance claims data from April 2017 to April 2019. Based on the occurrence of CRE, hospitalized patients aged ≥ 18 years were classified into CRE (cases) and control groups. Propensity scores based on age, sex, modified Charlson comorbidity score, insurance type, long-term care facility, intensive care unit stay, and acquisition of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci were used to match the case and control groups (1:3). RESULTS: After matching, the study included 6,476 participants (1,619 cases and 4,857 controls). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that the utilization of broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as piperacillin/tazobactam (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.178; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.829-2.594), third/fourth generation cephalosporins (aOR, 1.764; 95% CI, 1.514-2.056), and carbapenems (aOR, 1.775; 95% CI, 1.454-2.165), as well as the presence of comorbidities (diabetes [aOR, 1.237; 95% CI, 1.061-1.443], hemiplegia or paraplegia [aOR, 1.370; 95% CI, 1.119-1.679], kidney disease [aOR, 1.312; 95% CI, 1.105-1.559], and liver disease [aOR, 1.431; 95% CI, 1.073-1.908]), were significantly associated with the development of CRE. Additionally, the CRE group had higher mortality (8.33 vs. 3.32 incidence rate per 100 person-months, P < 0.001) and a total cost of healthcare utilization per person-month (15,325,491 ± 23,587,378 vs. 5,263,373 ± 14,070,118 KRW, P < 0.001) than the control group. CONCLUSION: The utilization of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the presence of comorbidities are associated with increasing development of CRE. This study emphasizes the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in reducing broad-spectrum antibiotic use and CRE disease burden in Korea.

PURPOSE: Understanding the influence of frailty on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older individuals experiencing chronic low back pain can provide valuable insights into the impact of frailty. Therefore, the aim of our study is to assess how different frailty statuses among older outpatients with chronic low back pain affect their HRQoL. METHODS: Patients aged 60 and above with chronic low back pain were recruited from March 2022 to February 2023. Frailty was assessed via the frailty phenotype questionnaire, and HRQoL was evaluated using the EQ-5D-5L. Multiple regression models were used to explore the influence of frailty status on the EQ-5D-5L index and EQ-VAS. Logistic regression was used to determine odds ratios for the impact of frailty status on belonging to the lowest EQ-5D-5L index quartile. RESULTS: A total of 1,054 participants were classified into robust (29.8%), pre-frail (47.7%), and frail (22.5%) groups. Frailty was significantly associated with declining HRQoL. Pre-frail and frail statuses were inversely linked to the EQ-5D-5L index, with significantly higher odds of scoring in the lowest quartile compared to robust individuals. Stratification analysis identified sex as an effect modifier, emphasizing a more substantial association between frailty and the lowest EQ-5D-5L index quartile in female patients. CONCLUSIONS: A significant association exists between frailty and reduced HRQoL in patients with chronic low back pain. This association was predominant in female patients. Furthermore, considering the dynamic nature of frailty, early detection and effective interventions targeting pre-frailty are essential to delaying the transition to full frailty and improving HRQoL.

Background: As the population ages, the rates of hip diseases and fragility fractures are increasing, making total hip arthroplasty (THA) one of the best methods for treating elderly patients. With the increasing number of THA surgeries and diverse surgical methods, there is a need for standard evaluation protocols. This study aimed to use deep learning algorithms to classify THA videos and evaluate the accuracy of the labelling of these videos. Methods: In our study, we manually annotated 7 phases in THA, including skin incision, broaching, exposure of acetabulum, acetabular reaming, acetabular cup positioning, femoral stem insertion, and skin closure. Within each phase, a second trained annotator marked the beginning and end of instrument usages, such as the skin blade, forceps, Bovie, suction device, suture material, retractor, rasp, femoral stem, acetabular reamer, head trial, and real head. Results: In our study, we utilized YOLOv3 to collect 540 operating images of THA procedures and create a scene annotation model. The results of our study showed relatively high accuracy in the clear classification of surgical techniques such as skin incision and closure, broaching, acetabular reaming, and femoral stem insertion, with a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.75 or higher. Most of the equipment showed good accuracy of mAP 0.7 or higher, except for the suction device, suture material, and retractor. Conclusions: Scene annotation for the instrument and phases in THA using deep learning techniques may provide potentially useful tools for subsequent documentation, assessment of skills, and feedback.

Background and Objectives: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) shows promise as an approach with neuroprotective effects, capable of reducing secondary brain damage and intracranial pressure following successful mechanical thrombectomy in the acute phase. However, its effect on cognitive impairment remains unclear. This study investigated whether TH can improve cognitive impairment in a mouse model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion followed by reperfusion (tMCAO/R). Materials and Methods: Nine-week-old C57BL/6N mice (male) were randomly assigned to three groups: sham, tMCAO/R, and tMCAO/R with TH. Cognitive function was assessed 1 month after model induction using the Y-maze test, and regional cerebral glucose metabolism was measured through positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose. Results: tMCAO/R induced cognitive impairment, which showed improvement with TH. The TH group exhibited a significant recovery in cerebral glucose metabolism in the thalamus compared to the tMCAO/R group. Conclusions: These findings indicate that TH may hold promise as a therapeutic strategy for alleviating ischemia/reperfusion-induced cognitive impairment.

Nasal endoscopy is routinely performed to distinguish the pathological types of masses. There is a lack of studies on deep learning algorithms for discriminating a wide range of endoscopic nasal cavity mass lesions. Therefore, we aimed to develop an endoscopic-examination-based deep learning model to detect and classify nasal cavity mass lesions, including nasal polyps (NPs), benign tumors, and malignant tumors. The clinical feasibility of the model was evaluated by comparing the results to those of manual assessment. Biopsy-confirmed nasal endoscopic images were obtained from 17 hospitals in South Korea. Here, 400 images were used for the test set. The training and validation datasets consisted of 149,043 normal nasal cavity, 311,043 NP, 9,271 benign tumor, and 5,323 malignant tumor lesion images. The proposed Xception architecture achieved an overall accuracy of 0.792 with the following class accuracies on the test set: normal = 0.978 ± 0.016, NP = 0.790 ± 0.016, benign = 0.708 ± 0.100, and malignant = 0.698 ± 0.116. With an average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.947, the AUC values and F1 score were highest in the order of normal, NP, malignant tumor, and benign tumor classes. The classification performances of the proposed model were comparable with those of manual assessment in the normal and NP classes. The proposed model outperformed manual assessment in the benign and malignant tumor classes (sensitivities of 0.708 ± 0.100 vs. 0.549 ± 0.172, 0.698 ± 0.116 vs. 0.518 ± 0.153, respectively). In urgent (malignant) versus nonurgent binary predictions, the deep learning model achieved superior diagnostic accuracy. The developed model based on endoscopic images achieved satisfactory performance in classifying four classes of nasal cavity mass lesions, namely normal, NP, benign tumor, and malignant tumor. The developed model can therefore be used to screen nasal cavity lesions accurately and rapidly.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle program based on a mobile serious game (HLP-MSG) to enhance the lifestyles of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). METHODS: This program proceeded in two stages: development and evaluation, using a non-synchronized design with a quasi-randomized trial. The participants were CCSs aged 6-13 years whose treatment was terminated at least 12 months prior. Data were collected at baseline, and post-intervention, with a follow-up after four weeks using the Child Healthy Lifestyle Profile (CHLP). The experimental (n = 26) and control groups (n = 25) were compared. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, t-tests, and repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS: The HLP-MSG promoted a healthy lifestyle by solving 26 quests, including seven sub-elements (nutrition, exercise, hygiene, interpersonal relationships, stress management, meaning of life, and health responsibility). This study revealed significant differences in the interaction between measurement time and group assignment in the CHLP (p = .006) and physical activity (p = .013), one of the seven sub-dimensions. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy lifestyle program based on a mobile serious game is a feasible health education modality to enhance the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health of CCSs. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: The findings add to scientific evidence on a mobile serious game for health education among CCSs. The HLP-MSG provides an evolutionary educational modality that can be delivered non-face-to-face to promote CCSs' continuous healthy behavior maintenance. Moreover, the HLP-MSG is adolescent-friendly and can be utilized as a healthcare tool for parents and children to cooperate.

New U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing of perinatally exposed infants and children released in 2023 recommend a nucleic acid test (NAT) for detection of HCV ribonucleic acid (i.e., NAT for HCV RNA) at 2-6 months of age to facilitate early identification and linkage to care for children with perinatally acquired HCV infection. Untreated hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and premature death and is caused by HCV, a blood-borne virus transmitted most often among adults through injection drug use in the United States. Perinatal exposure from a birth parent with HCV infection is the most frequent mode of HCV transmission among infants and children. New HCV infections have been increasing since 2010, with the highest rates of infection among people aged 20-39 years, leading to an increasing prevalence of HCV infection during pregnancy. In 2020, the CDC recommended one-time HCV screening for all adults aged 18 years and older and for all pregnant persons during each pregnancy. Detecting HCV infection during pregnancy is key for the identification of pregnant persons, linkage to care for postpartum treatment, and identification of infants with perinatal exposure for HCV testing. It was previously recommended that children who were exposed to HCV during pregnancy receive an antibody to HCV (anti-HCV) test at 18 months of age; however, most children were lost to follow-up before testing occurred, leaving children with perinatal infection undiagnosed. The new strategy of testing perinatally exposed children at age 2-6 months was found to be cost-effective in increasing the identification of infants who might develop chronic hepatitis C. This report describes the current perinatal HCV testing recommendations and how they advance national hepatitis C elimination efforts by improving the health of pregnant and postpartum people and their children.

Family history (FH) of alcoholism increases the risk of alcohol use disorder (AUD); however, the contribution of childhood trauma (CT) in this respect remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between FH and AUD-related clinical characteristics (social onset, antisocial tendency, and severity of problematic alcohol consumption) through the mediating effects of childhood trauma (CT) and conduct behaviors (CB) in a Korean male population with AUD. A total of 304 patients hospitalized for AUD at 16 psychiatric hospitals completed standardized questionnaires, including self-rated scales. Mediation analyses were performed using the SPSS macro PROCESS. Individuals with positive FH (133, 44%) had greater CT and CB and more severe AUD-related clinical characteristics than those without FH (171, 56%). In the present serial mediation model, FH had significant direct and indirect effects on AUD-related clinical characteristics through CT and CB. Indirect effects were 21.3% for social onset, 46.3%, antisocial tendency, and 37.9% for problematic drinking. FH directly contributed to AUD-related clinical characteristics, and CT and CB played mediating roles. This highlights the importance of careful intervention and surveillance of adverse childhood experiences and conduct disorder to prevent and mitigate alcohol-related problems in individuals with FH of AUD.

Colistimethate sodium (CMS) nebulization is associated with reduced systemic toxicity compared to intravenous injection, with potentially enhanced clinical efficacy. This study aimed to assess the pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of colistin during low-dose CMS nebulization in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. A nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach was applied to develop population PK models for colistin in both epithelial lining fluid (ELF) and plasma. Twenty patients participated, and 80 ELF and 100 plasma samples were used for model development. Median colistin concentrations measured in ELF were 614-fold, 408-fold, and 250-fold higher than in plasma at 1, 3, and 5 h, respectively. Time courses in both ELF and plasma were best described by a one-compartment model with a Weibull absorption process. When the final model was simulated, the maximum free concentration and area under the free colistin concentration-time curve at steady state over 24 h in the plasma were approximately 1/90 and 1/50 of the corresponding values in ELF at steady state, respectively. For an A. baumannii MIC of 1 mg/L, inhaling 75 mg of CMS at 6 h intervals was deemed appropriate, with dose adjustments needed for MICs exceeding 2 mg/L. Using a nebulizer for CMS resulted in a notably higher exposure of colistin in the ELF than plasma, indicating the potential of nebulization to reduce systemic toxicity while effectively treating VAP.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between depression and the risk of multimorbidity progression has rarely been studied in older adults. This study was aimed to determine whether depression is associated with progression in the severity and complexity of multimorbidity, considering the influence of depression's severity and subtype. METHODS: As a part of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia, this population-based cohort study followed a random sample of community-dwelling Koreans aged 60 and older for 8 years at 2-year intervals starting in 2010. Participants included those who completed mood and multimorbidity assessments and did not exhibit complex multimorbidity at the study's outset. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale, while multimorbidity was evaluated using the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale. The study quantified multimorbidity complexity by counting affected body systems and measured multimorbidity severity by averaging scores across 14 body systems. FINDINGS: The 2,486 participants (age = 69.1 ± 6.5 years, 57.6% women) were followed for 5.9 ± 2.4 years. Linear mixed models revealed that participants with depression had a faster increase in multimorbidity complexity score (ß = .065, SE = 0.019, p = 0.001) than those without depression, but a comparable increase in multimorbidity severity score (ß = .001, SE = .009, p = 0.870) to those without depression. Cox proportional hazard models revealed that depression was associated with the risk of developing highly complex multimorbidity affecting five or more body systems, particularly in severe or anhedonic depression. INTERPRETATION: Depression was associated with the worsening of multimorbidity in Korean older adults, particularly when severe or anhedonic. Early screening and management of depression may help to reduce the burden of multimorbidity in older adults.

We present a novel synthetic route for the rapid construction of dithieno[3',2':3,4;2'',3'':5,6]benzo[1,2-c][1,2,5]thiadiazoles via Na2S-promoted thiophene annulation. This method facilitated the synthesis of D18-Cl polymer, known for its efficacy as a polymer donor in bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. Starting from commercially available 4,7-dihalo-5,6-difluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole, various 4,7-dialkynylated compounds were obtained through Sonogashira reaction conditions. Subsequent Na2S-promoted thiophene annulations yielded DTBT and its derivatives in excellent yields within 10 minutes. DTBT was then utilized as a precursor for the concise synthesis of D18-Cl, benefiting from reduced synthetic steps, mild reaction conditions, decreased complexity, and high overall yields. In another route, a space group-bridged DTBT was directly constructed via Na2S-promoted thiophene annulations and converted into D18-Cl through a couple of steps. This developed protocol offers a straightforward and reliable synthetic tool, conducive to reducing complexities in the production of DTBT-based organic electronic materials, thereby advancing the potential commercialization of organic solar cells.

Investigating the impact of urinary mercury and cadmium on anthropometric parameters in Korean children is crucial amid growing concerns about heavy metal exposure and childhood growth. Using data from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2015-2017), we assessed age- and sex-specific associations of urinary mercury and cadmium with height and body mass index (BMI) z-scores in 1458 children aged 3-5 (n = 571) and 6-11 years (n = 887). Overall, 5.0% had stunted height (3-5 years: 6.9%, 6-11 years: 3.8%), whereas older children exhibited higher overweight/obesity prevalence (29.2%) than younger ones did (22.2%). In 3-5-year-old boys, urinary mercury correlated negatively with height z-scores (p < 0.001), whereas in girls, urinary cadmium correlated positively (p = 0.015). Boys aged 6-11 years showed positive associations between mercury/cadmium levels and BMI z-scores (p = 0.012). Logistic regression indicated associations between urinary mercury and stunted height likelihood (p = 0.001) and between urinary cadmium and reduced overweight likelihood (p = 0.039) in 3-5-year-old boys. In boys aged 6-11 years, urinary cadmium levels were positively associated with overweight likelihood (p = 0.003). This study underscores the link between elevated urinary mercury, cadmium levels, and growth disruptions in Korean children, emphasizing the need for public health strategies for reducing childhood heavy metal exposure.

We developed a 3D glomeruli tissue chip for glomerulonephritis (GN) testing, featuring a gravity-driven glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) with human podocytes and endothelial cells with a bidirectional flow in the bottom channel. Using puromycin-induced GN, we observed decreased cell viability, increased albumin permeability, and reduced WT1 and nephrin compared to the normal GFB. Tacrolimus restored cell viability, reduced albumin permeability, and increased WT1 expression. Using serum from five membranous nephropathy (MN) patients, we created MN models using a GFB-mimicking chip. A notable decline in cell viability was observed in the serum-induced MN1 and MN2 models. However, tacrolimus restored it. Albumin permeability was reduced in the MN1, MN2, and MN5 models by tacrolimus treatment. MN1 displayed the best clinical response to tacrolimus, exhibiting increased expression of WT1 in chip-based evaluations after tacrolimus treatment. We successfully evaluated the efficacy of tacrolimus using puromycin-induced and serum-induced GN models on a chip that mimicked the structure and function of the GFB. The GFB-mimicking chip holds promise as a personalized platform for assessing drug efficacy using patient serum samples.

Dendrites are ubiquitous crystals produced in supersaturated solutions and supercooled melts, but considerably less is known about their formation and growth kinetics. Here, the key factors are explored that dictate dendrite formation and growth, utilizing experimental colloidal models in which the particles act as molecules with Mie potential. Depletion attraction is employed to colloids and manipulate their strength to control supersaturation. Dendrites are predominantly produced under conditions of low supersaturation, where the separation between crystals is large due to slow nucleation. The dendrites do not emerge directly from nuclei. Instead, isotropic grains, initially produced from nuclei, morph into polygons. Arms then sprout from the vertices of these polygons, eventually giving rise to dendrites. Triggering this polygon-to-dendrite transformation requires a high diffusional flux. This necessitates a prolonged diffusion time to maintain a steep concentration gradient in the surrounding environment even after the transformation from circular grains to polygons.
